Bags

Start here for Australian green bags information, products and suppliers.

Plastic bags are a fossil-fuel product that take energy to produce. Once used, they go to landfill or end up as litter where they can be a danger to wildlife - for instance plastic bags in waterways can kill marine life.
Although plastic bag use has been falling in recent years, a report in the Sydney Morning Herald showed plastic bag use in Australia on the rise again to 4.84 billion in 2007 from 3.36 billion in 2006. The Federal Government says it is considering options to phase out the use of plastic bags, but has ruled out imposing a levy - a measure that cut the use of plastic bags by 90% when introduced in Ireland.
It's easy to do without plastic bags - it just requires a bit of initial thought to get into the habit of carrying reusable bags with you.
