Buildings are the greatest single contributor to greenhouse gases. The IPCC, the world's leading body of climate change scientists, estimates a third of greenhouse gas emissions could be saved by retrofitting buildings to be more energy-efficient.
Good design for new buildings, using passive solar design and good insulation, can cut energy needed to heat and cool buildings even further.
As well as energy use, green building issues include the raw materials and energy used in building materials, the chemicals in building materials, paints and interior furnishings, and salvagable building materials and furnishings that go to landfill (about 40 per cent of landfill is made up of building materials).
