Most Australian workplaces, like most Australian homes, are not energy-efficient. Improving energy efficiency is good for the environment and saves a business money too.
If you work in an office, you can make your workplace greener by turning off computers and lights, subscribing to GreenPower (see Energy), making sure all lights are energy-efficienct, not printing out paper unless it's really necessary, recycling paper and printer cartridges, and so on.
A firm can ensure its cleaners use chemical-free natural cleaners, its canteen serves less red meat (a big contributor to greenhouse gas emissions) and replaces disposable cups with reusable ones.
It can also reduce work travel through tele-conferencing, loans for public-transport season tickets and encouraging cycling to work and car-pooling.
These are just a few examples of how to green your workplace. A good way to start is by organising an energy audit of your building.
