• CLIMATE CHANGE
Find groups, campaigns and information on climate change in Australia.
Climate change may be the greatest challenge humanity has faced. Climate scientists warn we only have a few years to control and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel and land clearances, or face a planetary disaster.
Before the industrial revolution, carbon dioxide in the atmosphere was around 350ppm (parts per million). Today it is about 385ppm and rising fast, due to carbon released by burning fossil fuels such as coal and oil.. Scientists predict CO2 levels will soon be highest in human history.
The extra carbon dioxide traps heat that would otherwise escape into space, heating up the planet. This heating effect - global warming - could melt icesheets in the Arctic, Greenland and Antarctica, causing sea levels to rise, and melt permafrost, which would release more CO2 to speed up the warming process.
Australia, with 0.32 per cent of the world's population, produces about 1.43 per cent of carbon dioxide emissions. Per person, we are the world's worst greenhouse gas emitters at 27 tonnes per person. Australia is also one of the world's major coal exporters.
This section features climate change groups campaigns climate change in Australia, plus information resources from Australia and overseas. The big Australian green NGOs, such as Greenpeace and ACF, also have climate change information on their websites.
