Community Gardens
Find community gardens in Australia.
Community gardens are communal gardens that people from a local neighbourhood or community maintain collectively. Community gardens are usually divided into separate allotments allocated to individual community members.
Community gardening is one of the ways to bring food production back to urban and suburban neighbourhoods. This is an important part of the local food movement, increasing a community's self-sufficiency and reducing the amount of fossil fuels needed to transport food. It also allows city dwellers, including people without their own gardens, to grow food and learn gardening skills.
Community gardens could play an important role in a future in which there will be less oil available to sustain the current model of food production and distribution, and a global shortage of agricultural land.
