Nylon carpets are a petrol-based product and are usually treated with a range of chemicals as dyes, fire-retardants, stain-retardants and so on. The latex backing on most carpets contains styrene. All wool carpets, with no chemical treatments and a natural backing such as , are best. But note that all carpets harbour allergy-causing dustmites.
If you do want carpet, consider carpet tiles; changing a few tiles is a cheaper option, involving less waste, than replacing a whole carpet because of a few worn areas.
Bamboo is a faster growing, and hence more renewable, alternative to timber floorboards. But if you want timber, make sure it has not been logged unsustainably from old-growth forest. One way to do this is to buy salvaged floorboards from recycled building yards.
Use natural oils for floorboards, based on natural ingredients such as linseed oil or beeswax.
Other flooring options include ceramic tiles, cork (although it is imported from Europe) or natural flooring materials such as sisal, coir or jute.
