What makes a tour an ecotour? The two key factors are the environmental impact of the trip and what it teaches you as a visitor. Tour companies should aim to minimise the environmental impact of their trips by using low-impact ecolodges, minimising air and road travel, keeping visitor numbers to within the "carrying capacity" of delicate wilderness areas, and so on.
Good ecotours will also give visitors insights into natural ecosystems. And particularly where indigenous communities are concerned, ecotourism also involves being sensitive to local culture, and showing visitors how these cultures relate to their environments.
Ecotourism can put economic value on wilderness areas that encourage people to protect them; for instance by running tours into old-growth forest rather than logging them.
