Food

We all have to eat, and so food production has a huge impact on the health of the planet. These impacts range from toxic chemicals in fertilisers or pesticides, to forests cut down for cattle pasture. With world population soaring, producing enough food to feed everyone threatens to destroy wilderness areas.
On land, agriculture threatens forests, and chemically-intensive, single-crop commercial agriculture can destroy the soil, poisoning it with toxic chemicals and stripping it of essential nutrients.
And fish stocks are being overfished to the point of collapse due to unsustainable fishing methods such as indescriminate net trawling.
Throwing away less food is also part of eating sustainably. It's estimated that Australians waste more than $5 billion worth of food a year. Use up leftovers and compost what you can't use. For ideas on using leftovers, see LoveFoodHateWaste.
