LETS
LETS (Local Exchange and Trading Systems) is a network of local groups which enables local trading within a community. Trading is done in a local "currency" and recorded on the group's database.
One difference from using money is that the currency can only be spent within the group, so no-one can take resources out of the local community.
Another is that group members can start trading even if they have no credit "in the bank". That allows people on low incomes to contribute and take advantage of skills within the local community.
LETS can also allow, for instance, members to share tools such as lawnmowers and power tools, or to exchange surpluses of home-grown fruit and vegetables.
LETS is also a great way to build a network of like-minded local people.
