Water

Australia is the world's driest continent (with an average of 469mm per year compared to the world average of 746mm) yet Australia's per capita water use is the third highest in the world, after the US and Canada - an average Australian household uses 300,000 litres of water a year. Of that, only about 5 per cent is used for drinking or cooking. About 10 per cent is used to flush toilets. Most other water in homes could be reused in the garden - where roughly half of Australia's domestic water is currently used.

Australia has one of the lowest levels of public water recycling in the developed world: while European cities such as London recycle about 80 per cent of their water, Australian cities only recycle a tiny proportion.
